Jean (Hans) Arp Screenprint

£750

Jean (Hans) Arp
Croix (Cross), 1917/1959
Seven-colour screenprint (serigraph)
Edition of 135

This original print by Jean Arp belongs to a significant portfolio of twelve prints published by Éditions Denise René in Paris, in which the artist revisited and refined earlier compositions. Throughout his career, Arp frequently returned to familiar motifs, translating a single visual idea across different media and formats.

In Croix, Arp replaces his signature organic curves with a modular architectural structure. Interlocking forms stack like tectonic plates, creating a composition that appears delicately balanced - as though it might shift at any moment, yet remains firmly anchored at its centre.

While this geometry may initially feel like a departure, the work remains unmistakably Arp. Throughout his career, the artist sought to distil the natural world into its most essential forms. A co-founder of the Dada movement and later a central figure in Surrealism, Arp developed a visual language that moved fluidly between chance, structure, and organic abstraction.

Published as an edition of 135, the print is numbered on the bottom left. An image of the wider portfolio is shown for context; the present listing is for Croix (Cross) only.
